Coach Bogie

Coach Bogie

It is not very often that a small club has a living legend coach for them. In September of 2024, we hired one of the greatest player’s in NASL history, Vladislav “Bogie” Bogicevic.

“Bogie” the Yugoslavian star, was a key playmaker for some of the most successful teams in New York Cosmos history. Widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders in North American Soccer League (NASL) history, he was renowned for his exceptional passing accuracy and vision on the field.

Bogie played for the Cosmos from 1978 to 1984, and was integral to the team’s NASL championship victories in 1978, 1980, and 1982, featuring in the championship match each year—along with the 1981 final, where the team fell short. These three NASL titles added to the five Yugoslav First Division championships he secured during his 13-year tenure with Red Star Belgrade.

Over his NASL career, he appeared in 236 matches, scoring 39 goals but making a remarkable 166 assists. He led the NASL in assists for three consecutive years (1981, 1982, and 1983), with many of Giorgio Chinaglia’s prolific goals coming from his precision passes. His brilliance on the field earned him All-Star selections every season of his NASL career, beginning with second-team honors in 1978 and 1979, and progressing to first-team status from 1980 to 1984.

Although he retired from the Yugoslav national team at the age of 27, he had already earned 47 caps, including five appearances at the 1974 World Cup, where he scored one goal and helped lead Yugoslavia to the quarterfinals.

Bogie’s legacy as a midfielder is cemented not just by his accolades, but by his unparalleled ability to create scoring opportunities and elevate those around him. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2002.

In 1994, he began to explore coaching, and over the years, he held various head coaching roles. In July 1995, he took over as head coach of the New York Centaurs, a team in the now-defunct A-League.

Bogie continued to develop his coaching career, participating in national team scouting sessions ahead of the 1998 World Cup. In August 2000, he signed a two-year contract with the Yugoslav Football Association (YFA), where he was appointed as an assistant coach . He had coaching stint was with Portuguese Primeira Liga side Belenenses during the 2003/2004 season.

In 2010, he took on the role of head coach for SC White Eagles, a team based in Paterson, New Jersey, competing in the North Jersey Soccer League. In 2012, he joined the staff at Nyack College (NCAA Division II) as an assistant/technical advisor.

We are thrilled to continue working with Coach Bogie, who brings an unmatched wealth of knowledge and experience as both a player and a coach to the athletes we mentor at SNK.
